Engineering the
digital infrastructure
of West Africa

Luminex builds software, artificial intelligence and payment systems for organisations working where connectivity is uneven, budgets are real and the regulator is watching. Built in Freetown, Sierra Leone — designed here, for here.

What we do

Four disciplines, one engineering team

We take work end to end — the product, the payments rail underneath it, the data it produces and the models that make sense of it.

Software development

Product engineering for mobile, web and cloud — from a first release to a platform carrying real transaction volume.

  • Native and cross-platform mobile applications
  • Web applications and internal tooling
  • Application programming interfaces and integrations
  • Cloud infrastructure, deployment and observability

Financial technology & commerce

Payment and marketplace systems designed for how money actually moves in the region, with the licensing path considered from day one.

  • Digital marketplaces and agent networks
  • Mobile wallets and stored value accounts
  • Payment processing and settlement
  • Reconciliation, ledgers and audit trails

Data & geospatial

Turning scattered records and field data into systems people can plan with, drawn from work across environmental and public-sector programmes.

  • Data processing pipelines and analytics
  • Geospatial services and mapping
  • Systems integration across legacy sources
  • Dashboards, reporting and technical consultancy

Artificial intelligence

Applied models that fit the constraint set here — intermittent connectivity, local languages, modest hardware budgets.

  • Speech and language models for local languages
  • Document understanding and extraction
  • Forecasting and decision support
  • On-device and offline-first inference

Our products

Software we build, own and run

Alongside client work we develop our own products. Same engineering standards, except we are the ones carrying the pager when something breaks at 2am.

Phinex

One app to shop, share and connect

A marketplace, social feed and wallet in a single mobile app, aimed at entrepreneurs and small traders. List stock, reach buyers nearby, agree the deal in chat and take the payment without ever leaving the conversation.

phinex.app(opens in a new tab)
  • Marketplace for entrepreneurs and small businesses
  • Social feed with reels, stories and community sharing
  • Encrypted chat and location-based discovery
  • Digital wallet for transfers between users
  • Affiliate programme for resellers

The platform

Built on constraints, not assumptions

Most systems sold into this market were designed somewhere else, for a network that never drops and a user who always has data. Ours are not.

Offline-first by default

Systems that keep working when the network does not, then reconcile cleanly when it returns.

Built for the regulator

Audit trails, data residency and reporting designed in from the start, not bolted on before an inspection.

Owned by you

Source code, infrastructure and documentation handed over. No lock-in to a vendor you cannot replace.

Local engineering

A Freetown team that can be in the room, working to the standards of the international programmes we deliver for.

How we work

A short path from idea to running system

Four stages, no theatre. You see something working early and keep seeing it improve.

  1. 01

    Understand

We start with the constraint, not the technology — who uses this, on what device, under what supervision, and what happens when it fails.

  2. 02

    Prototype

A working slice in front of real users early. Cheaper to be wrong in week two than in month six.

  3. 03

    Build

Incremental delivery with tests, review and a deployment pipeline. You see progress every sprint, not at the end.

  4. 04

    Operate

Monitoring, support and handover. We train your team to run it, and we stay reachable when they need us.

About Luminex

A Freetown technology company with international standards

Luminex is a technology company formed to close a specific gap: serious technical capability that understands the operating conditions of Sierra Leone, rather than treating them as edge cases to be patched later.

Our team's work spans mobile engineering, cloud infrastructure, geospatial analysis and payment systems, including delivery on donor-funded and public sector programmes. Alongside that, we run services for businesses and entrepreneurs — from founders getting a first product off the ground to established companies modernising how they work.

We are a small team by choice. Every project has an engineer who knows it end to end and can answer for it.
